The T&DI Infrastructure Systems Committee Activity Report

The Infrastructure Systems Committee (ISC) under the Mode Spanning Council of T&DI had a busy and productive year.  In addition to its annual committee meeting in January at TRB, ISC conducted its monthly leadership teleconferences to discuss committee business and held its quarterly virtual committee meeting to keep committee members informed of the committee’s activities.   In the past year, ISC had sponsored and/or supported a series of workshops, symposiums, and conferences, including the 7th Annual Interuniversity Symposium on Infrastructure Management (AISIM7) in Evanston, IL in June 2011, the 10th Infrastructure Management Research and Education (IMRE) Workshop at TRB in January 2012, the organization of the Second Advance Infrastructure Management Boot Camp to be held at Georgia Tech in June 2012, and the organization of the 9th Asian-Pacific Transportation Conference to be held in June 2012.

The ISC committee also discussed the planning and development of a webinar on Infrastructure Asset Valuation, submitted a proposal for a sustainable infrastructure section at the upcoming national sustainability conference, and invited an international speaker to its 2012 annual meeting at TRB.  Furthermore, ISC put together a subcommittee to explore the feasibility of establishing an ASCE-wide committee on asset management.  For the next year, ISC has developed its work plan with a full agenda of activities, such as supporting the 1st International Conference on Public-Private Partnership in Infrastructure to be held in July 2013 and the 9th International Conference on Managing Pavement Assets to be held in 2015.

Gerardo Flintsch, professor at Virginia Tech and Chair of the committee, coordinated many of the activities.  With the help of Vice-Chair Zahnmin Zhang, associate professor at UT Austin, the committee has been exemplary in leading various technical activities and mentoring graduate students at many campuses around the country.
