About $500 million in TIGER grants for surface transportation projects are available from the Department of Transportation. “Americans are demanding investments in highways, ports, commuter rail, streetcars, buses and high-speed rail,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “These kinds of projects not only mean a stronger economic future for the U.S., but jobs for Americans today.” Transport Topics Online (1/31)
A coalition led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has launched a "Make Transportation Job #1" campaign, which urges Congress to pass a multi-year highway and transit bill. The campaign will include television, radio, print and on-line ads that will run in Washington, D.C., and nine states. “The long-delayed reauthorization of federal highway and public transportation programs is a major piece of unfinished business that can provide a meaningful boost to the U.S. economy and its workers and already has broad-based support,” the groups write. Sustainability in Action
New Web Feature Showcases Sustainable Infrastructure Projects
In infrastructure projects large and small, civil engineers are applying principles of sustainability to deliver "triple bottom line" benefits to the public. ASCE's website features a new library of project profiles that demonstrate how sustainable infrastructure contributes economic, environmental and social benefits. Featured projects span all sectors and scopes, ranging from under $1 million to more than $1 billion. The expanding library will help civil engineers research solutions, share data and information with clients, and find sources for further research. The site allows users to rate and comment on profiles, and encourages submission of additional proviles via an easy-to-use online form.

The Street and Highway Operations Committee is one of the most active and successful Technical Committees in the Roadway Council of the Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of ASCE.
One of the distinguishing works carried out by the committee this past year was its participation in the T&DI’s First Congress convened on March 13-16 in Chicago. The four-day event brought together 240 attendees to discuss integrated strategies focusing on smart development and efficient multi-modal movement of people and goods to support the economic pulse of our nation and the world. Working with the Safety Committee of T&DI’s Mode Spanning Council to co-sponsor one of the Congress’s five technical tracks, the committee reviewed numerous abstracts and accepted 25 submissions for presentation as part of the Transportation Operations and Safety Technical Track during the Congress.
The Committee is already planning on participating in the Second T&DI Congress as plans are beginning to be formulated for that event. Visit here to learn more.
Construction work along the New York State Thruway is progressing, with concrete noise barriers being installed. The 5,000 sections of concrete sound walls are part of a $99 million project that aims to add a lane to both sides of the highway.
