I hope that many of you had the chance to participate in this year’s Transportation Research Board meeting in Washington, DC. The program was packed with great content. In addition to those activities, many of the T&DI committees had the time to meet face-to-face. Our ommittees are working on specialty conferences, webinar development, white papers, education programs, technical standards, and much more. There is growing involvement in Put the Brakes on Fatality Day with a cross-cutting partnership. Railroad Engineering continues to be a technical area on the rise again.
A partnership between T&DI and the Institute of Transportation Engineers has led to a robust series of conferences. The ITE Mid-Year meeting to be held in March, 2010, in Savannah, GA will set the stage for the conversation to reduce energy consumption, lessen transportation’s impact on the environment and better utilize available financial resources. The last session is called Progress, Challenges and Next Steps. I will be the speaker for the last topic which will allow me to set the stage for T&DI’s Green Streets & Highways Conference, November 14-17, 2010 to be held in Denver, Colorado (www. green-street-highways.org) The conference will an Interactive event on The State of the Art and How to Achieve Sustainable Outcomes. There are still some opportunities to participate so check the T&DI website for dates and deadlines. I hope to see you in Savannah and in Denver.
Much of my career, I have been involved in mentoring activities and programs. In the last several years, I have had the chance to author two that have now been successfully implemented. Have you had a mentor in your life? Have you taken the time to mentor someone else? Please send me a brief write-up on your experience – include your contact information if you are willing to let me do some follow-up. I’d like to explore the interest within T&DI for articles on the topic or perhaps formulating a program. Send your comments to me at: tanddi@asce.org

Update on Outreach to Younger Members
Thanks to those who sent their comments, questions and provided input on this subject. I am processing that information and working on next steps, so stay tuned. If a half-day session were convened to brainstorm about the future of the organization and younger members, would you be interested in participating?
If you have not yet let me know you want to be involved in helping define the future opportunities for this group, please send an email to me at: tanddi@asce.org
